PLN Nusantara Renewables, TotalEnergies, and Adaro Power Take a Major Step Toward Constructing the Largest Wind Power Plant in Kalimantan

Jakarta, July 5, 2024 – In a demonstration of their shared commitment to delivering clean and sustainable energy to the Indonesian people, TotalEnergies, Adaro Power, and PLN Nusantara Renewables (PLN NR) have formalized their collaboration by signing a Shareholder Agreement (SHA) for the Tanah Laut Wind Power Plant (PLTB) project. The agreement was signed on Friday, July 5, at the Muara Karang Meeting Room, PT PLN (Persero) Headquarters.

Located in Tanah Laut Regency, South Kalimantan, the Tanah Laut PLTB marks a significant milestone as the first wind power plant under the PLN Group and the first of its kind on the island of Kalimantan. The plant will have a total capacity of 70 megawatts (MW), generated by 11 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 6.6 MW. To enhance reliability, the project will also include a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with a capacity of 10 MW/10 MWh, designed to address fluctuations in power generation during operation. This innovative combination makes the Tanah Laut PLTB the first hybrid wind power plant in Indonesia to feature an integrated battery storage system.

The project will be implemented and operated by a joint venture company (JVC), PT Tala Alam Baru. The company is established by a consortium comprising TotalEnergies and Adaro Power through PT Bayu Energi Listrik Lestari (PT BELL), which holds a 70% ownership shares. PLN Nusantara Renewables, as the mandatory partner appointed by PLN, holds the remaining 30% ownership shares. To support the project’s financial needs, the International Finance Corporation (IFC) has committed to providing funding, underscoring the initiative's strong environmental credentials.

The signing of the SHA marks the beginning of a strategic collaboration between PLN NR, TotalEnergies, and Adaro Power in advancing renewable energy development in Indonesia. It also aligns with the Indonesian government’s ambitious target to achieve a 23% renewable energy mix by 2025.

Harjono, President Director of PLN Nusantara Renewables, stated, "It’s an exciting opportunity for us to collaborate on this partnership. The Tanah Laut PLTB is not only a significant step in diversifying PLN NR’s energy portfolio but also a concrete manifestation of our commitment to providing clean and sustainable energy to communities across Indonesia."

In line with that, President Director of Adaro Power, Dharma Djojonegoro, expressed similar optimism. "It is an honor to collaborate with PLN NR and TotalEnergies on this landmark project. The signing of the SHA demonstrates our dedication to realizing Adaro’s green vision through the Adaro Green initiative, which focuses on developing renewable energy sources to drive Indonesia’s energy transition. We are confident that the Tanah Laut PLTB will bolster electricity supply within Kalimantan’s interconnection system, enhance the renewable energy mix, and deliver reliable, sustainable, and affordable energy for the people."

"We are pleased to welcome PLN NR as a partner. The signing of this SHA is a critical milestone for us, as this will be the first wind power project in Kalimantan and our third in Indonesia. By leveraging our expertise, we are committed to contributing to Indonesia’s energy transition journey by delivering cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions," added Gregory Thomassin, Head of Business Development for TotalEnergies Renewables APAC.

The Tanah Laut PLTB is expected to be completed and commence operations by 2025, playing a pivotal role in mitigating climate change and helping Indonesia meet its renewable energy goals.
