5,000 Mangrove Seedlings from PLN Nusantara Renewables Ready to Enhance and Protect Coastal Areas Around Jawa 7 Power Plant

Banten, July 26, 2024 – Every year, July 26 is celebrated as the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem. Marking this occasion, PLN Nusantara Renewables, with its subsidiary, PT Shenhua Guohua Pembangkitan Jawa Bali (SGPJB), continued their mangrove conservation program around the Jawa 7 Power Plant. The event featured not only the symbolic planting of mangroves but also a drawing competition for children and a site tour around the power plant and jetty, coinciding with Indonesia’s National Children’s Day.

The Jawa 7 Power Plant, a 2 x 1,050 MW coal-fired power plant, stands as one of the most advanced and environmentally friendly power plants in Indonesia. Committed to providing reliable, affordable, and clean energy, the plant also focuses on fostering a healthier environment for nearby communities. Beyond employing ultra-supercritical technology to enhance efficiency, the plant has implemented a Mangrove Protection Plan to maintain the ecological balance throughout its construction and operational phases.

“At PLN Nusantara Renewables, we believe that business success must go hand in hand with environmental sustainability,” said Harjono, President Director of PLN Nusantara Renewables. “As an energy sector company, we carry a profound responsibility to safeguard nature’s sustainability. This commitment is reflected not only in our efforts to develop renewable energy technologies but also in our initiatives to protect and preserve ecosystems,” he added.

As part of this commitment, and under the theme “Hand in Hand, We Are Committed to Investing in Nature: Plant Mangroves for the Future of Mankind,” PLN Nusantara Renewables planted 5,000 mangrove seedlings last Friday (July 26). Over their estimated eight-year lifespan, these mangroves are projected to absorb 146.5 tons of CO2—equivalent to reducing emissions from a car journey of over 2.3 million kilometers. This initiative follows a similar effort in 2022, when the company planted 7,000 mangrove seedlings that now flourish around the Jawa 7 Power Plant.

Zhou Zhigang, President Director of PT SGPJB, commended PLN Nusantara Renewables’ efforts, saying, “We are deeply committed to environmental protection in Indonesia, actively conserving mangrove forests, and establishing wildlife protection centers within mangrove ecosystems. Our goal is to develop a sustainable and environmentally friendly power plant, a commitment that has earned recognition and trust from the public and stakeholders alike.”

Representing CHN Energy Group, Yun Tianbao, President Director of GD Power, delivered a virtual message urging the global community to strengthen mangrove conservation efforts by increasing resource investments, advancing scientific research, and exploring innovative development strategies. “Together, let’s envision a future where mangrove forests thrive, oceans grow clearer, and our planet becomes even more beautiful,” he concluded.
