Penajam Paser Utara, East Kalimantan – President Joko Widodo marked a historic moment by laying the foundation stone for the Nusantara Capital City Solar Power Plant (PLTS IKN), boasting a capacity of 50 Megawatts (MW), in the Nusantara Capital City area, commonly referred to as IKN, in East Kalimantan, on Thursday (2/11/2023).

PLTS IKN stands as a pioneering initiative in generating New Renewable Energy (EBT) for the new capital. This collaborative project between PT PLN Nusantara Renewables and PT Sembcorp Renewable Indonesia is slated to commence operations in the second quarter of 2024.

Furthermore, the IKN PLTS, boasting a 50 MW capacity, is equipped with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). This cutting-edge system captures renewable energy, storing it in batteries for future use.

"Currently, the most prevalent implementation of BESS is in energy storage systems for hybrid power plants with new renewable energy (EBT), such as PLTS Bawean, PLTS Terapung Cirata, and PLTS IKN," stated Ruly Firmansyah, President Director of PLN Nusantara Power.

Embracing the forest city concept, with 75% of the area comprising green spaces, IKN aspires to become a net-zero emissions capital city. The construction of this power plant underscores the government's commitment to fostering an environmentally friendly electricity system. It is estimated that this PLTS will slash emissions by up to 104,000 tons of CO2 annually, generating around 93 Gigawatt-hours (GWh) of green energy per year to cater to all electricity needs in IKN.

President Joko Widodo also emphasized the scalable power generation capacity at IKN, adaptable to regional requirements and developments. "In addition to harnessing solar power, the Managing Director of PT PLN also mentioned plans to harness the hydro potential around IKN," President Widodo explained. This reaffirms IKN's dedication to relying on new, renewable energy sources capable of delivering reliable, clean electricity without environmental harm.
