1,000 Mangrove Seeds from PT PLN Nusantara Renewables Ready to Absorb 29.3 Tons of CO2!
North Jakarta, Indonesia – Last Thursday (30/11), PT PLN Nusantara Renewables celebrated a milestone with the successful planting of 1,000 mangrove tree seedlings (Rhizopora Sp.) in the Angke Kapuk Mangrove Nature Tourism Park area in North Jakarta. This initiative is a testament to the company's commitment to environmental stewardship and corporate social responsibility (CSR). Collaborating with Jejakin, an organization providing a platform for calculating carbon footprints, PT PLN Nusantara Renewables assumes the role of provider and manager of these mangrove plants. Mangrove plants, also known as Mangroves, play a vital role in mitigating climate change. One of their most significant contributions is their ability to absorb carbon dioxide emissions caused by human activities.Their sequestration capacity, four times higher than other tree species, underscores their effectiveness in capturing and storing CO2 over extended periods. This significantly contributes to the reduction of greenhouse gases in both the atmosphere and oceans. Furthermore, mangrove plants also play a crucial role in maintaining coastal ecosystems. With their strong roots, mangrove trees reduce the impact of tides on the coastline, preventing the erosion of sand and mud from the beach into the sea. Additionally, these roots provide habitats for various species of fish, shrimp, crabs, and other animals, which serve as a source of livelihood for local fishermen. Over a lifespan of eight years, 1,000 mangrove plants are estimated to absorb 29.3 tons of CO2, equivalent to the emissions of a car traveling 461,907 km. To ensure the achievement of emission absorption targets, PT PLN Nusantara Renewables collaborates with Jejakin, which provides a dashboard to monitor levels of carbon absorption, water infiltration, soil quality, and air quality within the planting areas. This comprehensive approach ensures the enduring positive impact of mangrove trees for years to come.
